Zac Efron will portray Kevin Bacon in remake of Footloose

The 21-year-old has been snapped up after the box office success of High School Musical 3.

He will play Ren McCormack — portrayed by KEVIN BACON first time around.

The remake has been in the works for some time but is now being fast-tracked to capitalise on the massive success of Disney’s HSM franchise and the “Zac factor”.

Footloose, released in 1984, launched Kevin Bacon’s movie career.

This month, Bacon, 50, gave Efron’s rumoured part in the flick his blessing. He said: “I think it’s a great idea. He’s a great choice. He’s very talented.”

The film, scheduled for release in 2010, will see Efron tie up again with KEVIN ORTEGA, the director of all three High School Musicals.

It is understood the movie will also be a musical featuring new songs as well as originals such as Deniece Williams’ Let’s Hear It For The Boy, and Bonnie Tyler’s Holding Out For A Hero.

The film’s soundtrack went on to become one of the biggest-selling albums of the decade.

Disney has confirmed that a fourth High School Musical will be made — but Efron has announced to fans his character Troy Bolton will not be returning.

‘He’s hot!’ she tells Ellen DeGeneres on her chat show. ‘Yes [he’s a good kisser] - we kiss in the movie.’

Last week Vanessa helped Zac celebrate his 21st birthday by hosting a dinner party in LA.

But she still hasn't had chance to give him a present.

‘I haven't given it to him yet, I'm kind of late,’ she added. ‘It's something for a house.’

Zac Efron's deadly rumours

Zac Efron's mother was left devastated when she heard a rumour her son had died.

The 'High School Musical 3: Senior Year' star was the victim of an inaccurate story published by a foreign newspaper claiming he had been killed.

He said: "I was really shocked to find out - and my mom was really upset too when I called and told her."

The 20-year-old actor also admits he is not a very good dancer, despite leading many of the set-pieces in all three of the hit Disney films.

He added to Britain's The Sun newspaper: "I'm definitely not a dancer. I grew up being into sports and I wasn't trained to move my body in the right way for dancing.

"I'm the last one to get any moves correct. In rehearsals it's always, 'OK, one more take for Zac.' "

Zac has previously said he would love to star in a remake of classic musical 'Grease', which originally starred John Travolta.

He said: "If John was involved I'd do it. But without his consent there's no way I could ever attempt a role like that. That's too hard, he's just too cool. He's a stud!"

Zac Efron wants to star in a 'Grease ' remake

Zac Efron wants to star in a 'Grease' remake.

The 'High School Musical' heartthrob admits he would love to step into John Travolta's shoes as gang leader Danny Zuko in the musical movie, but only with the legendary actor's consent.

Zac - who appeared alongside John in the recent film version of hit musical 'Hairspray' - said: "If John was involved I'd do it. But without his consent there's no way I could ever attempt a role like that. That's too hard, he's just too cool. He's a stud!"

The 20-year-old actor also revealed he is happy to star in more musicals after the success of his Disney movie franchise, and is convinced Hollywood will continue making all-singing, all-dancing films.

Zac added: "I love musicals! I've noticed that various movie studios want to get involved with making musicals and I think it's great. They're making a comeback and so I think there should be more in the pipeline. Any time there's a musical, I'm up for being on board. It's fun."

Zac Efron was a 'nerd' in school

Zac Efron was a "nerd" at school.

The 'High School Musical' star admits he wasn't very popular with girls when he was growing up and was never in a cool "clique".

He said: "I didn't get much attention from chicks. I was the short kid in high school. I was, like, 5ft 6in. But as soon as I left and started working then I started to grow up a little bit. I wasn't really the cool guy or the skater dude. I had a group of friends but we weren't like a clique or anything like that. I tried really hard, I got good grades and I was in advanced classes. If you had to call me something you'd probably call me a nerd."

Zac, 20, admits he still isn't comfortable with his heartthrob status since he shot to fame playing Troy Bolton in the hit Disney movies.

He added: "It's OK. Luckily, it's not something I really have to deal with too much. I suppose I would be an OK role model. I don't do much wrong - I'm not really into the Hollywood party scene."

Zac, 20, insists he prefers the quiet life.

‘I like to read – everything from novels to comic books,’ he tells OK! ‘It’s kind of a shame but I’m just a regular dude.

Zac Efron annoys his 'High School Musical' co-stars by filming them all the time.

The 20-year-old actor - who stars as basketball stud Troy Bolton in the Disney movie franchise - can't stop using his 'Zac cam' according to Corbin Bleu, who plays Chad Danforth in the teen films.

Corbin said: "Zac walks around everywhere with his 'Zac cam' and films everything. He put tape around my trailer like it was a hazard. I was like, 'What the heck is going on?!' And he was filming it all on his Zac cam!"

Vanessa Hudgens, who is Zac's co-star and real-life girlfriend, added to Top of the Pops magazine: "It's true! Zac is the class clown and the biggest troublemaker!"

Zac revealed he found the dance scenes in the new movie 'High School Musical 3: Senior Year' difficult to cope with.

He said: "I came into rehearsals a few weeks late and that was a really bad idea! It was so tough catching up. Corbin is the most incredible dancer I have ever seen and Vanessa is hard to keep up with. Man, she's co-ordinated!"
