The singer, 42, has postponed a string of dates across North America, following her admission to hospital in Montreal last month.

But after telling fans she’d be back on stage in New York on Monday, Janet pulled out at the last minute on the advice of medical staff.

No other details about her illness are known.

'Exhausted' Janet Jackson

Janet Jackson is thought to be suffering from "exhaustion".

The 'Feedback' singer, who was rushed to hospital after being taken ill during a sound check for a concert in Canada, had previously refused to comment on the reason for her illness.

But a close friend of the star's boyfriend Jermaine Dupri claims Janet is just very "tired".

The source told gossip blogger Perez Hilton: "A 42-year-old body can't handle what a 22-year-old body can. I can tell you that she's definitely tired. It was probably exhaustion.

"She is doing back-to-back, three-hour shows, and her body isn't the same as it used to be."

Janet has postponed two dates on her North American tour to promote her new album 'Discipline' after she was hospitalised on Monday (29.09.08).

This is the second time this year the star has received hospital treatment.

In March, Janet checked into the Los Angeles' Cedar-Sinai Medical Center to be treated for flu symptoms after complaining of "shortness of breath".

Janet Jackson was forced to cancel her concert in Montreal on Monday night after she “got suddenly ill” during a sound check for the show.

Jackson was taken straight to hospital just before she was set to take to the stage as part of her Rock Witchu tour - her first in seven years.

She is being monitored by medics at a nearby hospital and hopes to reschedule the show, according to a statement released by W&W Public Relations.

Janet Jackson has ended her working relationship with Island Records.

The singer became frustrated with the label when she claimed it had stopped promoting her new album Discipline.

‘At her request, the record label has agreed to dissolve their working relationship,’ her rep tells People.

‘Now more than 20 years after the release of her iconic album, Control, Janet will have autonomy over her career, without the restrictions of a label system.’

Despite parting ways with the company, Janet, 42, will continue her Rock Witchu tour across America.

She signed to Island Records in July 2007.

Janet Jackson has quit her record label.

The 'Together Again' singer demanded Island Records terminate her contract after just over a year with the company because she has grown increasingly disillusioned by their efforts to promote her music.

Her spokesperson said: "At her request, the record label has agreed to dissolve their working relationship. Now, more than 20 years after the release of her iconic album 'Control', Janet will have autonomy over her career, without the restrictions of a label."

Janet signed to Island Records on July 2007, releasing 'Discipline' - her only album with them - in February.

Although it reached number one in the US album charts, it quickly plummeted, leading to the 42-year-old singer publicly venting her frustration with the label in June.

She said at the time: "I'm trying to figure out a way to say this, but just to say it and to be quite honest, they just stopped all promotion whatsoever on the album."

A spokesperson for Island Records responded by saying: "Unfortunately, we haven't experienced the results we would have liked with this new album. But we respect and support Janet."

Despite her label split, Janet - the sister of eccentric pop star Michael Jackson - will continue her current 'Rock Witchu' tour across the US.

The 36 songs performed by the star featured hits voted for by fans through a telephone call-in. The Rhythm Nation star would listen to their messages and then personally telephone the callers back to discuss further what they would like to hear.

As the singer took to the set's catwalk for her song Together Again, her eighth Billboard No 1, the crowd went wild.

Standing at the end of the set's catwalk, the youngest of the Jackson clan had to fight back the tears as she thanked her loyal fans.

Janet Jackson launches lingerie line called 'Pleasure Principle'

Janet Jackson has teamed up with an Australian fashion designer to release her own collection of underwear.

The singer worked with Bruno Schiav to launch a unique line of lingerie called Pleasure Principle, inspired by one of her records.

It is thought the range will offer ladies Chantilly lace, satin and a variety of bra styles and sizes.

‘There's something for every woman, and that's very important to us,’ Janet said at a press conference.

‘I've always hated when lingerie is uncomfortable, so the fit and comfort was key.

‘People have come to me with other ideas, but lingerie is a passion for me, and just like music and acting, I can't do it unless I put 100% into it.’

The line is expected to be released in November.

Meanwhile, Janet's boyfriend Jermaine Dupri just signed a deal with TAG Deodorant Body Spray. He will act as president on a 'full-fledged record label' for a joint venture between Island Def Jam records and the company.

To my disappointment, Jermaine says that does not mean rappers will be doing songs about deodorant. But, the alliance allows for a bigger marketing budget than anywhere else in the hurting industry.

'We're mixing the best of both worlds together - the marketing of a product like TAG and the lifestyle that TAG represents, and then what the music and myself bring to the music industry,' Jermaine said.

Be on the lookout. The TAG label is looking to release its first single from a new artist in the next two weeks. Janet's album was released in the U.S. on February 26.
