Twilight’s Record Breaking Weekend

The highly anticipated cult vampire romance Twilight didn’t disappoint at the theaters this weekend bringing in an impressive 70.6 million in its opening weekend.

Catherine Hardwicke’s film also broke a record for the biggest opening ever for a female director, blowing away the previous standard of $41.1 million set by Mimi Leder ’s Deep Impact in 1998.

Drawing from its huge fan base of teenage girls, who fell for Stephenie Meyer’s novel of forbidden love between brooding vampire Edward Cullen and bookish high schooler Bella Swan , Twilight made a whopping $20,636 per theater, according to Sunday morning estimates.

And if that’s not enough Summit Entertainment, which released Twilight, announced during the weekend that it’s going ahead with production of New Moon, based on the second book in Meyer’s internationally best-selling series.

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart will return as its star-crossed lovers, but whether Hardwicke will be at the helm again is still being determined.

Hardwicke, who went bodyboarding at sunset Saturday to take her mind off this high-pressure weekend, said Sunday morning that she was heading to a meeting later in the day to discuss her possible involvement in New Moon.

“I want to be sure that it’s going to be done right. I don’t want to rush into it. It’s not like ` Friday the 13th ‘ or ` Halloween ,’ you can’t just do it super fast and knock another one out. I want to understand their plans and all that.”

Hardwicke, whose previous films include Thirteen and Lords of Dogtown, also said she was thrilled about the prospect that the success of “Twilight” will inspire other women and young girls to pursue a career in filmmaking.

“I hope not just women but all minorities get enthused and encouraged by it. I look at the ( Directors Guild of America ) calendar, at the pictures of everyone that had different movies each month, and it’s usually 22-29 different directors, and almost every month there’s one female and maybe one minority,” she said. “We’ve been having a lot of events, talking to a lot of fans, and so many kids of course are madly in love with Robert but tons of kids of every kind (and) girls are coming up to me and saying `I want to direct now, I’m writing a screenplay now, you’re my inspiration.’ I think it’s great that people are getting excited.”

Here’s the estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be released Monday.

Travis Barker Sues Over Plane Crash

Travis Barker has filed a lawsuit over the South Carolina plane crash that injured him and DJ AM and killed two friends.

In the lawsuit Barker names Bombardier Inc., Clay Lacy Aviation, Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., and a maintenance company. He is seeking more than $25,000 in damages.

Barker’s suit claims the companies improperly operated and maintained the plane. The Sept. 19 crash killed two pilots, Barker assistant Chris Baker and Barker bodyguard Charles Monroe Still Jr.

Still’s mother, Thelma Martin Still, is also suing the companies.

In the lawsuit, Travis and Thelma Martin Still claim “one or more of the tires failed leaving tire debris and portions of airplane components along the 8,600 foot runway” ultimately causing the Learjet to crash.

The suit alleges a “negligent attempt to abort the takeoff.” The suit continues, “The pilot’s decision was a breach of their duty owed to the passengers onboard and was a substantial factor in causing the crash and resultant injuries and deaths.”

The suit also alleges the plane was “defective,” as were component parts including the tires.

The suit goes on, “It’s landing gear, tires, wheels, brakes, reverse thrust system, squat switches and component parts were not airworthy.”

Barker is suing for “pain and suffering, mental anguish, psychological and emotional distress and disfigurement and pre-impact fear of death and burning.”

A rep for Clay Lacy just told TMZ:

“We are surprised about the lawsuit and concerned and knowledgeable about the accident. We are sympathetic for the victims but we want to emphasize we were not operating this airplane. This was not our airplane. We merely assisted the parties in chartering this aircraft with another company. We simply booked it for them.”

Jodie Sweetin And Husband Cody Herpin SPLIT

Former Full House star Jodie Sweetin, 26, has filed for divorce from her husband and 7-month-old baby daddy Cody Herpin, 31.

Sweetin filed papers Wednesday in Orange County, Calif., for legal separation from Herpin, whom the actress had once called a “blessing” who helped turn around her life after years of methamphetamine addiction.

The couple became parents of daughter Zoie in April.

“I was dumbfounded,” Herpin tells PEOPLE, adding that Sweetin left their home and took their 7-month-old girl. “Over this past month something has been different. I’m concerned about our daughter and I just want (Zoie) home.”

Sweetin’s agent, Stella Alex, says the actress is “absolutely clean” and that the couple have “come to this path in their life and she felt like this is the way she had to go. Jodie says it’s unfortunate but it’s just what has to happen right now. No more detail, only because she says she doesn’t want to be disrespectful to him.”

The pair were married in July 2007 and recently announced they were working on a reality show together.

According to the Superior Court papers, Sweetin seeks joint legal and physical custody of Zoie.

The actress lists the date of separation as Tuesday – the day before papers were filed – and cites as the cause the standard “irreconcilable differenes.” She also asks that Herpin pay the legal costs.

Jay-Z and Beyonce Knowles have topped a new Forbes magazine poll and are named as Hollywood’s richest couple.

The Crazy In Love stars, who quietly wed in April, have taken over in the fortune dept. in the year from June 1st 2007 to 2008. Jay-Z alone earned $82 million from his recent $150 million 10-year deal with concert promoter Live Nation, while wife Beyonce is real close behind bringing in $80 million from her various ventures in fashion, film and music.

Their 2008 fortune sets them far apart from Hollywood’s other power couples - Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith are in second place in the poll with $85 million, while Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie could only manage fifth place with $34 million.

Days Of Our Lives Stars Drake Hogestyn And Deidre Hall Fired

No! Not Marlena!

The New York Post is reporting that the producers of the long-running soap opera ‘Days of Our Lives’ have fired two of the shows biggest stars, Drake Hogestyn (John Black) and Deidre Hall (Marlena Evans) in an effort to cut back on the budget.

NBC has released the following statement on the decision:

“Days of Our Lives’ has decided to rest the characters of John Black and Dr. Marlena Evans. After a year of separation, John and Marlena will finally reunite before exiting the canvas in early 2009.”

Hall began her stint as Dr. Marlena Evans in 1976 on Days of Our Lives. She left the role in 1987 to focus on the NBC primetime drama, Our House, which aired until 1988. She came back to DOOL in 1991. She is the only actress to play the role of Marlena.

Hogestyn joined the show in 1984. Days of Our Lives is the only daytime drama currently airing on NBC.

Hunky 42-year-old Johnny Depp has been named the sexiest man in the world by the UK edition of Cosmopolitan magazine.

He beat out fellow fortysomethings George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Daniel Craig to the top spot.

Angelina Jolie has topped a new list of the most popular celebrity face.

Forbes magazine’s new tabloid survey suggests more people are likely to buy magazines with the new mom’s face on the cover than any other star’s. (I’m sure the new W Magazine where she’s breastfeeding on the cover is no exception)

Ironically, Brad Pitt’s former wife Jennifer Aniston, who topped the list in 2007, came in second this year to Angelina.

Jolie won in all Forbes categories - for sales, likability and most covers.

Heath Ledger came in third, while Jamie Lynn Spears and Nicole Richie rounded out the top five.

Lindsay Lohan To Dress As Sarah Palin For Halloween

In another attempt to poke fun at Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, Lindsay Lohan is reportedly planning to dress up as the politician for Halloween when she attends a Trick or Treat party on October 31.

According to the New York Daily News, she will sport Palin’s trademark fitted red suit and trademark glasses for the party.

It’s no secret LiLo isn’t a fan of the Alaskan Governor after slamming her numerous times via her MySpace blog for her strict views on gay rights, branding Palin a “narrow- minded, media-obsessed homophobe.”

Lohan’s girlfriend Samantha Ronson will reportedly join the star in costume - dressing up as Palin’s husband, Todd.

Black Eyed Peas Fifth Album ‘The E.N.D.’ Is Coming Soon

The Black Eyed Peas are due to complete their fifth album, “The E.N.D.,” in London next week.

Producer and group member will.i.am tells Billboard.com:

“I’ll be finishing the record Oct. 15.”

Recording sessions have been taking place at Metropolis Studios in London.

Although he wanted to be clear that the album title is not an indication that it’s intended to be the groups final record:

“No, no — it stands for ‘The Energy Never Dies.’”

Black Eyed Peas’ previous set, 2005’s “Monkey Business” (A&M/Interscope) has sold 4.2 million copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.

“We still have a contract with them,” says will.i.am, adding that the number of albums left to deliver was “not that many.”

Colin Farrell Admits His Drinking Habit Was Killing Him

During a recent appearance on the Jonathan Ross show Colin Farrell admitted that his drinking habit was killing him.

”I’d been drinking since I was 14. I was pretty sick. At the beginning [of recovery] I found it really hard.

“For me there was no choice… it was tough but I was dying. I was struggling not to have a complete meltdown… I was just gone.

“I’m glad I’m out of that cycle, I’m very lucky.”

Farrell also told Ross that he was being serious about wanting to seduce Emmy award winning writer Dame Eileen Atkins:

“The one that got away! I gave it all that I was worth. She’s an incredibly attractive woman, wicked.

“I fell at the first hurdle, my ego couldn’t take any more refusals. I saw her in New York and said our time will come… it’s unfinished business!”

Seth Rogen Signs On For New Comedy ‘I’m With Cancer’

Funny man Seth Rogen has signed on with the new comedy ‘I’m With Cancer’.

Rogen will also produce the movie, which follows the trials faced by a cancer sufferer.

Empire Magazine reports that the film was written by American TV producer Will Reiser, who was diagnosed with cancer in his mid-twenties and has based his script on largely autobiographical incidents.

Other famous names involved in the project include Rogen’s writing partner Evan Goldberg and Ben Karlin.

According to the news provider, it is not yet known who Rogen will play in the film, although it suggests he will not take the lead role as he is busy with a number of other projects including the forthcoming Green Hornet.

Britney Spears Teams Up With MTV For TV Special

Britney Spears has joined up with MTV for a primetime special to set the record straight and open up on mistakes she has made in the past and her bright future ahead.

The 90-minute documentary about her return to the music spotlight, tentatively titled For the Record, is set to air on November 30 at 10 p.m. on MTV just days before her birthday and the big release of her latest album, Circus.

Of the special Britney says:

“So much has gone on over the last couple of years and there’s a lot that people don’t know about me that I want them to know. I wanted to make this film because I started to feel like I wasn’t being seen in the light that I wanted to be seen in. This is an opportunity to set the record straight and talk about what I’ve been through and where I’m headed.”

”I sit there and I look back…I’m a smart person, what the hell was I thinking?”

The documentary will include personal stories with behind-the-scenes footage of her in the recording studio and going to rehearsals, press tours and the video shoot for her single “Womanizer.” There will even been footage of a recent visit she made to her hometown of Kentwood, La.
