The actress, 34, prefers her life in Spain away from the glare of the media spotlight.

‘You have to create a safe environment for yourself, so you can be the observer, instead of the object,’ she tells Easy Living.

‘It doesn't mean you can't go to a bar or walk in the park. I do that.'

The Vanilla Sky star is currently dating fellow Spaniard Javier Bardem, 39.

Penelope Cruz admitted that getting married isn't a priority

Penelope Cruz has admitted that getting married isn't a priority – as long as children figure in her future.

'I haven't really thought about [marriage] much,' she says. 'I love children and some day I want to have kids and to adopt kids, too.

'That's a bigger priority for me than getting married.'

The 34-year-old actress is currently dating No Country For Old Men star Javier Bardem, 39. But she's reluctant to talk about their relationship.

'I don't want to get into anything personal,' she tells Hello! 'It's just a protection I've developed. I'd rather talk about Javier as an actor.

'I can only say great things about that because he has an amazing talent. I think he's one of the best actors out there.

And Penelope, 34, agrees with her co-star.

‘Scarlett and I have been asked that question a thousand times, and we are sorry that we don't have any funny stories to tell you about it,’ she tells the Daily Mirror.

Penelope Cruz has a “monster” that ruins her romances. In her interview with W Magazine she hinted that her failed relationships with Matthew McConaughey and Tom Cruise were wrecked by her gloomy alter-ego, which has spoiled magical moments ever since she was a child.

Cruz, who is now dating fellow Spaniard Javier Bardem, tells the mag she calls her angry inner voice “the monster” and has spent her life trying to control it.

“I’m always finding very tricky and hidden ways to sabotage any beautiful moment. And it’s something so internal that I don’t think even my friends or family can catch me doing it. But I catch myself doing it.

“I’ve had that battle since I was a little girl. It’s like, `Uh-oh, here it is again, the monster! Go away and leave me alone!’ With time, you get more at peace with it. I used to get very upset about it, and very angry at myself. But now, when it comes, I just send it away.”
